How I start

Updated: Jun 24

A few days ago, I opened a fresh sketchbook.

And then did absolutely nothing.

The page sat there. I sat there.

It’s strange how an empty page can feel important than it really is.

As if the first mark needs to be good. Or meaningful. Or worth keeping.

The moment one shape appears on the page (A square, Or a circle.

or a triangle) it stops being a blank page.

Now it could be a drawing. A very bad drawing perhaps, but a drawing nevertheless.

And strangely, that’s usually enough to get the next line moving.

A Birdzo who nudges. A business partner who says, “Just send it.”

They simply help you make that first mark.

I’ve realised entrepreneurship works in a very similar way.

The first email. The initial proposal. The first conversation. The early recipe we want to test out - they all feel larger in our heads than they actually are.

From what I understood, the trick is rarely courage. The trick is disruption.

Draw a box.

Send the email.

Make the call.

Put the first thing down.

Over the years I’ve also realised that starting becomes easier because of friends around us. And once that mark exists, the rest somehow follows.

Just enough to keep going.
